Group First balloon set to soar over London for Lord Mayor’s charity

The Group First hot air balloon is preparing to take on the capital as part of a spectacular London Regatta.

Fifty hot air balloons will fly across London to raise money and awareness for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and promote the City of London.

The celebratory event is due to take place early on a Sunday morning within the next month, depending on weather conditions.

It’s the brainchild of Exclusive Ballooning, an organisation which has raised more than £7,000,000 for UK charities and has this year chosen the Lord Mayor’s Appeal as the recipient of its fundraising efforts.

The Lord Mayor’s Appeal raises money for The Rt Hon. The Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Alan Yarrow’s chosen charities, which are Scope and Mencap.

Group First has joined the event as an associate sponsor and will be sending its own official balloon to take flight over the capital.

Richard Gahan, Group First Financial Director and balloon pilot said: “Fifty balloons flying across the London skyline will be a phenomenal spectacle and we are excited to be a part of such a huge event.

“The Group First team is raring to go.”

London has a long history of ballooning after Italian aeronaut Vicenzo Lunardi demonstrated his hydrogen balloon in the capital in 1784. It was later the first balloon ever to fly in Great Britain when Lunardi took flight from London to Hertfordshire with a dog, cat and caged pigeon in tow.

Group First is proud to be part of this historic event. Weather reports have confirmed it won’t be going ahead this weekend – but stay tuned for up-to-the-minute news as it happens!
