Group First Balloon top at Bristol Balloon Fiesta

The Group First Balloon came top of the standings in the “Evening Post Long Distance Race”.

The Group First balloon piloted by Robert Jones and Richard Gahan managed back to back long distance flights to put them in the running for the trophy. When the results were announced at the “Survivors’ Party”, the two two pilots stood on the top step of the podium beating a double World and European Champion and other competition pilots.

Don Cameron quoted;

“The results of the Evening Post long-distance race were as follows:

1st Bob Jones           14.416 km
2nd Dave Bareford       13.775km
3rd Steve Fensome       13.281km

A special mention was made of Andrew Holly who achieved 14.112 km, discounted by 30% as last year’s winner to 9.878 km.

Bob Jones winning flight was on the evening of Friday 10th August 2012 landing near North End, Yatton, Somerset.”

The Group First Balloon had an excellent Fiesta with tethering in the main arena on Thursday afternoon and Friday lunchtime (in front of the TV cameras), two long distance flights and a short one on Saturday morning with “less than favourable conditions” – only pilots with greater than 250 hours were given permission to fly out.

The highlight of the weekend was being part of the “Party night themed” Nightglow on Saturday evening along with 20 other balloons. The balloons glowed for forty minutes to music in front of a packed arena with an estimated 300,000 spectators watching the event.
